This was the second natural building internship I did. I spent two months at Deanne Bednar's place and I really enjoyed it. Deanne is a wonderful woman with a lot of knowledge. She always provided a good balance of work and time for ourselves. This is a perfect experience if you are interested in learning specific aspects of Strawbale building. Deanne teaches about thatching, rocket stoves, plastering, round pole construction, and much more. I got a lot of hands on experience with making and using cob and adding on to a structure she called the "Hobbit Sauna". I learned a lot and Deanne was always willing to teach me about anything I was interested in learning. This isn't ideal if you are wanting to learn how to build an entire straw bale home from start to finish but if you do want to know about specific aspects of building then it is perfect. It is a little pricey but she offers a half and full work trade if you don't have money to pay for it. Make sure to check out her website and like the Strawbale Studio on Facebook so you can see what she's doing and how you can get involved if you are interested in learning about natural building. Overall I would say this was a great experience and would definitely recommend to anyone interested in learning about the specific things Deanne teaches.
